By 2024 there are nearly 300 nations, countries, territories and political authorities around the globe. A number of them require some or even all visitors to apply for a visa before entering including China*, India, Russia, Brazil and Nigeria.
However, US American citizens can enter 160 or more places without the need for a visa in their US passport. Business or other types of visit may still require a visa application from an embassy or reputable visa agency.
China now has 72-hour (3-day) visa-free entry for tourists at Beijing Airport. US (and 44 other countries) citizens holding third country visas and onward flight tickets can apply for a transit without visa (TWOV). This would allow enough time to visit the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and the Great Wall of China without a Chinese visa.
