“Retire in Luxury” is a guide recently updated for 2010 by Barbie Parks that focuses on Mexico rather than Southeast Asia as a retirement destination for North Americans. However, it serves as a useful comparison between two very different cultures and lifestyle, with countries like Thailand, Laos and Myanmar (Burma) being primarily Buddhist and animist, with Mexico (and in SE Asia the Philippines for that matter) strongly Roman Catholic. The local religion may influence your choice of where to live as it definitely affects the culture and social structure.
You can certainly reduce your cost of living by moving to another country or region, but to ‘retire in luxury for pennies‘ as the website used to describe and was an exaggeration. It has been revised as realistically, a typical Westerner would need $1,000 or more a month to live in reasonable comfort anywhere these days.
Retire In Luxury (revised for 2010) is worth the read, though, if you’re considering a move to or retirement in Mexico.
