Retire In Luxury For Pennies?

“Retire in Luxury” is a guide recently updated for 2010 by Barbie Parks that focuses on Mexico rather than Southeast Asia as a retirement destination for North Americans. However, it serves as a useful comparison between two very different cultures and lifestyle, with countries like Thailand, Laos and Myanmar (Burma) being primarily Buddhist and animist, with Mexico (and in SE Asia the Philippines for that matter) strongly Roman Catholic. The local religion may influence your choice of where to live as it definitely affects the culture and social structure.

retire-mexicoYou can certainly reduce your cost of living by moving to another country or region, but to ‘retire in luxury for pennies‘ as the website used to describe and was an exaggeration. It has been revised as realistically, a typical Westerner would need $1,000 or more a month to live in reasonable comfort anywhere these days.

Retire In Luxury (revised for 2010) is worth the read, though, if you’re considering a move to or retirement in Mexico.

Well, I have to admit Mexico was where I used to hang my sombrero when I first started traveling. A nice mixture of the exotic and the familiar. (I used to live in California). And now, the American dollar is still doing well there! Quite true it is a great place to retire. Very hospitable also……I once wandered alone into a cafe on the Pacific coast there. The waiter asked me if I was alone. I told him yes. The next moment he put a white linen tablecloth down, put a lit candle on it, and he ushered in a smiling young woman who sat down across the candlelight from me. I don’t get that much in the States!
