Relationships between foreigners (especially from the West) and Thai women are known to have a high failure rate. There is a lot of misunderstanding between East and West culture, and expectations from both parties.
Rick Gilmore, the author of a guide to the girls of Pattaya, Thailand lives there and has become somewhat of an expert on the topic. If you want to get the best out of a relationship with a Thai woman, especially one from ‘the provinces’, there are certain things you must learn and understand.
I suggest you download and read Pattaya Girls before your next trip to the go-go bar or nightclub. It’s only $27 – the price of a few drinks, but it might just save you from losing a fortune – and more importantly give you an insight into the lives and aspirations of many of these Thai ‘working girls’.

Yes, a very interesting, worthwhile book! I’ve spent some time there myself, and can attest that Pattaya can seem like “Casablanca” – hard to know what the motives are of the ladies, and indeed of all concerned. And, of course, motives change as relationships mature and change and grow.
Beyond that, there is the basic difference between East and West. I once was buying drinks for a bar girl on Soi 8. For a laugh, I figured to buy a drink for another girl also. I was the only male in the bar (born lucky), and I figured all the ladies would have a laugh. Wrong….you could have heard a pin drop in that bar.
We just got back from our vacation to Pattaya and really wish that we didn’t have to leave as we absolutely loved it and will surely come once again! We stayed at The Bungalow Mountain Resort which we would for certain recommend. We rented a motorbike at $60 for 6 days, it was by far the most cost effective and a convienent way to go and it was alot of fun too! The zoo is definitely worth while taking a trip. Also restaurants in Pattaya to visit are The Sweet n Spicy-romantic, delish and cool. Book a table with your feet in the pool!
Is Rick Gilmore a pen name or the author’s real name ?
I don’t know Richard or Rick Gilmore personally, but the book copyright is in his name and he claims to have lived in Pattaya for several years. By the way, I checked your blog link and the photos will whet the appetite of any visitor to Pattaya! Better buy the book, though, as looks can often be deceiving…
Thanks for your article. It’s very unfortunate that over the last years, the travel industry has already been able to to handle terrorism, SARS, tsunamis, bird flu, swine flu, as well as the first ever entire global economic depression. Through everything the industry has proven to be solid, resilient plus dynamic, discovering new ways to deal with adversity. There are constantly fresh challenges and the opportunity to which the business must just as before adapt and respond. Regards from Thailand
